Circular walk around Guildford
Distance: 15.5 miles
Guide: Guide Info
My Distance: 12.95 Miles
Time - 6Hrs
So parked up in Guildford railway station - £5.00 for the day on a weekend, not to bad and headed off to Shalford
Walking along the River Wey (in a thunderstorm storm which soon passed)
Crossing the river a few times, pretty quiet as I started around 7, I guess it’s a busy area later in the day
Through Shalford, across the green and past the local pond
Finally arriving at Chillworth Gunpowder Mills setup in 1626, plenty of evidence of the past still around
and finally a chance to check the route
So refreshments done its on to Silent Pool
Arrived at Silent Pool
Just a little green looking but apparently fed by underwater springs and very clear
Now we are off to Newlands Corner
The track to the top of the Downs seems to go on and on and on - everyone was coming down and I was the only one going up (now I know why they all smiled at me)
Once walking along the top of the downs there are two joined Beech Trees (inosculation) not something I have ever actually seen before
There is more to the walk but I called it a day at this point, a great walk with lots on route such as Gunpowder Mills, St Catherine’s Chapel (14th Century), St Martha on the Hill and so on - I may well go back for another look round.
